Group Discussion (GD) Tips for Success in Campus Placements

Welcome To Fresher Duniya,

Based on the averages mentioned in earlier post... you would have noticed that it is more stressful for the Company Representative than you due to the high rejection or non availability of people clearing some of the stages. Hence it is your responsibility to prepare well for 21 months atleast for making sure that your 21 years of Education is positive.

* Basic Preparation to include - GRE/ Gate/ CAT workbooks are the best to clear the aptitude skills. It’s a good practice to solve some papers during vacations starting from the first year. Knowledge never harms one. In any case most of the model question papers of various companies are placed in various Online portals.

* Ability to communicate effectively written / Oral helps to a great extent. Your ability to express clearly and precise would help the representatives of companies to identify your talent and map for their needs quickly.

* Some basics you need to improve is to read the news paper and making summary of some of the articles you would have read. Also try and make as many presentations in the college to ensure that your preparation for the selection process is perfect. It also improves your logical flow of thinking.

* Your habit to solve puzzles, suduko, even observation skills ( simple thing can be children activity books gives you lot of basic insights into sharpening your skills.)

* Check your voice recorded (Use any device – mobile, tape or computers) to ensure you get a feedback for yourself for improvement. Seek support of your friends to identify the voice and the critical things you need to keep in mind for better expression.

* Have a brief idea of the company coming in before hand. The question papers of most of the MNC are available online. Have a look at a few papers to know the type of questions. Some of them can be found at freshersworld.com

* Review your self / resume thoroughly and check your objective, goals, information you listed, strengths, weaknesses, etc.

Acing Group Discussion - Be Honest and Interact

Welcome to Fresher Duniya

Most important issue in Group Discussions is .... never keep quiet and keep looking at people without any expression or no points being added. In GD if you think you have not contributed much as part of the initiation, adding points – take the position of summarizing the discussion, or in between keep repeating the information in support of people who are discussing. Try to summarize at the end.

Dress appropriately and behave normally and positively during written and especially at Group Interaction levels. Do greet the Facilitator of Group Discussion to ensure to create a comfortlevel for yourself. Also do interact with most of the group members and ensure that you have a good eye to eye contact and relation build before the Group Discussion. This would help you to express yourself during the process.

Companies try to identify...

* One thing in Group Discussion the company would like to analyse is to identify your true self. Your behaviour should be as normal as you generally interact with your team members during your college interaction. 'Think if you are meeting your team / gang at a coffee shop / irani joint, that’s how you should be and in a positive way to representing a college or a group and making that impression.

* Please be pleasant and ensure your specific body language which you are used to in the normal conditions are avoided if negative.

* Always project a positive attitude, interested to learn during the Group Discussions and helping your other members to add value to the process & time spent together.

* Ensure during the interaction you are typically lean forward and making notes while looking at every member of the group. That would help to catch up any of the points that may be of importance to stress on and gives you the control over the discussion.

Be honest yourself...

* Be honest and be yourself. Ask for clarification if you don’t understand a what is happening during the Group Discussion. This doesn’t mean that you continue to seek clarification during the entire process but for desired and relevant areas only.

* Most important switch off your mobile phones or set them to silent mode i.e. don’t allow your cell phone to ring during the process of written or GD. Best thing is don’t carry them where the selection processes is on.

Remember that the average strike rate in Group Discussion to Interview is 20% (some times none or some times may be more) with a strike rate of 2 out of a group of 10.

All the Very BEST!!!

Stydying B.Tech. (ECE). Jobs after this....

Dear Fresher Duniya Students,

A reader / student asked: I am doing my engineering in Vijayawada . I am studying 3rd year in ECE branch . till now I got 70% aggregate . I want to do job after my engineering as my family needs my help. I am interested on communication field . And also i have good knowledge about electronics. could you suggest me what are the jobs that I can get after my engineering. I want to do my MBA while doing job. please advice me.

Answer: There are plenty of job opportunities for the right candidates. As you are in the most demanding branch (ECE), you should be in the demanding position by the end of your course.

Your percentage of marks (70%) may not be enough considering the competition in job market today. As you need to settle in career after your Engineering, you must plan very carefully from now. First thing you concentrate on gaining some industry experience. Try to do 1 or 2 projects / internships.

* If you are in your 3rd year, you shall do a mini-project after 3rd year itself. Try to apply what you have learned in the college.
* And also concentrate on improving your communication and other soft skills.
* As per the NASSCOM guidelines, companies have to recruit the candidates when they in their 4th year only. Earlier companies used to come to placements at the end of third year. This change will give you more time to improve technical and soft skills.

One more important thing is... start searching and applying for companies for projects immediately. This is the right time companies look into interns for the coming summer. First identify the relevant companies to your branch and sort out them based on your preferences.

You shall think about MBA after gaining some real industry experience with BTech. Then only your MBA adds some value to your career. So, first get ready for your big first job.
